Hemp fiber has been used for centuries in
the mountainous regions of Nepal because of
its strength and durability. Native to Nepal,
hemp requires no cultivation or pesticides,
and its production has become a valuable
economic asset for the war torn villages of
western Nepal. Heavier yarns are hand spun
and hand woven in the villages creating the
fabrics we use in our bags, hats and vests.
Finer yarns are machine spun in Kathmandu
and hand woven into the hemp/cotton fabric
used in our clothing.

Our hemp clothing and accessories are
tailored in Kathmandu. Producers receive a
fair wage and additional benefits such as
bonuses, paid leave and medical expenses.
Ganesh Himal has worked with this
innovative group of producers since 1985
and together we are always looking for
creative ways to use more hemp fabric in
our products.
